Three hours outside of Manhattan, Life House Berkshires took shape as a roadside escape in the hills of Western Massachusetts. Reimagined from a dilapidated Days Inn, the hotel introduces a new perspective on upstate retreats—one that retains the ease of a roadside stay while offering an intimate, design-forward experience. A library lounge, cocktail bar, and restaurant invite guests to slow down, while interiors draw from the region’s artistic legacy, inspired by the writers and creatives who once sought refuge in the stillness of the Berkshires.

Life House was given an unusual challenge—turn a neglected roadside motel into an inviting destination for New Yorkers. The task was twofold: to completely reinvent the space and introduce a new market to the magic of the Berkshires, encouraging travelers to drive past more familiar stops in favor of something undiscovered.

We built a hotel that balances innovation with nostalgia, creating a design-led experience that speaks to city dwellers looking for something different. Life House Berkshires maintains its roadside roots but reveals a world within—a space layered with warmth and intention, where the library lounge, cocktail bar, and restaurant take cues from the region’s literary history. Inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne and the artists who sought inspiration in these mountains, the interiors reflect the shifting hues of the landscape, offering a retreat that feels both grounded and imaginative.
